Note: This extremely rare Umayyad fals of ʿAbd al-ʿAla b. ʿIyadh, overstruck on an earlier coin of al-Walid b. Talid, is a remarkable survival from northern Mesopotamia. ʿAbd al-ʿAla b. ʿIyadh governed the region briefly, asserting his authority through such overstruck coinage, while al-Walid b. Talid, his predecessor, had originally issued the base coin as part of his administration in Mosul. Coins like this are extremely scarce, offering a tangible link to the provincial governance and political transitions of the late Umayyad Caliphate.
