Byzantine, John II Comnenus, AE Trachy (bronze, 3.75g, 29mm), Constantinople mint, AD 1118-1143
Obv: Facing bust of Christ, holding Gospels and raising hand in benediction
Rev: Crowned facing bust of John, holding scepter and globus cruciger
Ref: DOC 10b; SB 1944 Rarity/Choice: Common, aVF
Note: This Trachy struck at Constantinople, reflects both Byzantine spirituality and imperial authority. The obverse depicts Christ Pantocrator, holding the Gospels and giving a blessing, a powerful emblem of divine sanction over the empire. On the reverse, John II appears crowned, holding a scepter and globus cruciger, symbols of earthly power under heaven’s guidance. The cup-shaped flan, typical of trachy coinage, mirrors the artistic and monetary style of the 12th century. These coins were integral to Byzantine commerce and also conveyed the Komnenian vision of an emperor ruling as Christ’s chosen representative on earth.
