Note: Issued just after Heraclius’ decisive victory over the Persians and recovery of the True Cross, this small bronze from Cyzicus reflects the renewed stability of the empire. The joint portraits of Heraclius, his wife Martina, and son Heraclius Constantine underscore the image of dynastic continuity at the moment of triumph. Cyzicus, a key mint in northwestern Asia Minor, supplied much of the routine coinage needed to restore economic normalcy after years of war.
