Note: The joint depiction of Justin II with his wife Sophia is one of the earliest examples of an empress appearing prominently alongside the emperor on Byzantine coinage. This reflects Sophia’s significant political influence during Justin’s reign, especially as his mental health declined later in life. Struck at Thessalonica, the half follis belongs to the reduced bronze system of the later 6th century, marking the continued contraction of Byzantine coinage in weight and size compared to the Justinianic era. These issues also highlight the empire’s need to emphasize dynastic legitimacy and stability during mounting external pressures from Persians and Avars.
