Note: This Follis was issued under Maurice Tiberius, whose reign focused on defending the empire against Persians in the east and Slavic incursions in the Balkans. Antioch, renamed Theoupolis after its rebuilding following the great earthquake of 528, remained an important minting center for supplying the eastern provinces. Coins from this period reflect both the empire’s military and financial pressures as well as its effort to maintain stable bronze currency for everyday transactions in a time of near-constant warfare.
