Note: This Follis belongs to the early issues of Maurice Tiberius, a soldier-emperor whose reign was defined by continuous warfare and strenuous attempts at reform. Having succeeded Tiberius II Constantine, Maurice faced immediate threats from Persia in the east and from Slavs and Avars pressing into the Balkans, while also struggling with the empire’s limited resources. The Constantinople mint, as the empire’s central workshop, produced substantial bronze coinage like this to maintain urban commerce and pay the armies, reflecting both the practical needs of the state and the emperor’s assertion of authority in the first years of a challenging reign.
