Note: This Follis was issued under Heraclius (610–641 AD) alongside his son Heraclius Constantine and is notable for being overstruck on earlier issues of Tiberius II or Justinian I, reflecting the practical reuse of existing coinage during a time of fiscal and military strain. Heraclius came to power following the overthrow of Phocas and immediately faced the Persian invasion of the eastern provinces, making efficient coin production essential. The Nicomedia mint, a key eastern workshop, produced bronze issues to sustain local economies and pay troops, while the overstriking underscores the empire’s pressing need to maintain currency circulation amid ongoing conflict and administrative transition.
