Note: The Artuqid dynasty, a Turkmen ruling family, governed the region of Diyarbakir in northern Iraq (now in southeastern Turkey) through two distinct branches: one centered at Hisn Kayfa and Amid (1098–1232), and the other at Mardin and Mayyafariqin (1104–1408). Founded by Artuq ibn Ekseb, the dynasty’s origins trace back to his reward for loyal service to the Seljuq sultan, which granted him Palestine in 1086. However, subsequent conflicts with the Fatimids led to their expulsion from Palestine. Mu’in ad-Din Sokmen, a descendant of Artuq, returned to Diyarbakir, capturing Hisn Kayfa (1102), Mardin, and various northern districts. Meanwhile, his brother Najm ad-Din Ilghazi re-entered Seljuq service and assumed the governorship of Iraq under Sultan Muhammad. Upon his assignment to Diyarbakir around 1107, Ilghazi seized control of Mardin from one of Sokmen’s sons in 1108, establishing it as the capital of his lineage while leaving Hisn Kayfa to his brother’s descendants.
