Note: This Nummus belongs to the anonymous series struck under Basil II and Constantine VIII, a period that marked the military and territorial peak of the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages. Basil II, known as the “Bulgar-Slayer,” consolidated imperial power and secured frontiers through relentless campaigns, while his brother Constantine VIII played little direct role in governance. The anonymous bronze series, omitting the emperor’s image in favor of Christ’s, emphasized the divine authority legitimizing the state, reflecting the era’s strong religious character and the growing focus on sacred iconography in Byzantine coinage.
