Note: This Follis belongs to the anonymous series issued during the reign of Nicephorus III Botaneiates (1078–1081 AD). His short and troubled reign was marked by political instability, court intrigue, and military challenges, particularly threats from Normans and internal rebellions. The Constantinople mint, producing bronze coinage for both city and provincial use, issued these anonymous folles with the facing bust of Christ Pantokrator on the obverse and a Latin cross on the reverse, emphasizing the empire’s reliance on religious authority to legitimize imperial rule during a period of weakened central power.
