Note:Ā  Lucius Domitius Aurelianus, commonly known as Aurelian, was a Roman Emperor who reigned from AD 270 to 275. His reign is most noted for the reunification of the Roman Empire, which had fragmented during the Crisis of the Third Century. Aurelian’s military successes, including the defeat of the Gallic Empire in the West and the Palmyrene Empire in the East, earned him the title “Restorer of the World” (Restitutor Orbis). His reforms and consolidation efforts helped to stabilize the empire during a period of severe internal and external challenges.Ā  The obverse features a radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian facing right. The radiate crown indicates the coin’s denomination as an Antoninianus and symbolizes the emperor’s association with the sun god Sol Invictus, a deity closely linked to Aurelian. The cuirass emphasizes Aurelian’s role as a military leader, highlighting his preparedness to defend and restore the empire. The reverse depicts a female figure, personifying the restored world or the Roman Empire, standing to the right. She is presenting a wreath, a symbol of victory and honor, to Aurelian, who stands to the left, holding a scepter as a sign of authority.Ā Ā  “RESTITVT OR-BIS” translates to “Restorer of the World.” This inscription celebrates Aurelian’s efforts to reunify the Roman Empire after it had been fractured by internal divisions and external threats.
