Note: Aurelian was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 270 to 275 AD. His reign is noted for the reunification of the fragmented Roman Empire during the Crisis of the Third Century. Aurelian successfully quelled internal revolts and external threats, including the defeat of the breakaway Palmyrene Empire, which had been established by Queen Zenobia in the East. Vabalathus was the son of Queen Zenobia and ruled as King and co-emperor under his mother’s regency. His reign is primarily associated with the Palmyrene Empire, which controlled much of the Eastern Roman provinces until its reconquest by Aurelian. Aurelian’s reign was marked by efforts to restore the unity and stability of the Roman Empire during a period of fragmentation and crisis. His reconquest of the Palmyrene Empire in 272 AD brought Vabalathus and his mother Zenobia under Roman control. This coin reflects the temporary political arrangement where Vabalathus was recognized as a subordinate ruler under Aurelian before being fully incorporated into the Roman Empire. The obverse features a radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian facing right. The radiate crown signifies divine favor and the sun god Sol Invictus, a deity associated with Aurelian. The cuirass highlights his role as a military leader.  The reverse features a laureate and draped bust of Vabalathus facing right. The laurel wreath symbolizes his royal status, and the drapery signifies nobility.
