Note: Gordian III was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 238 to 244. He became emperor at a young age during the tumultuous Year of the Six Emperors. His reign was marked by a relative period of stability, largely thanks to his advisors and military commanders, who effectively managed both internal and external challenges. The coin of Gordian III from Nicaea is a noteworthy example of Roman provincial coinage. The obverse, featuring a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of the emperor, emphasizes his divine favor and military leadership. The reverse, with two aquilae and four standards, symbolizes the power and unity of the Roman legions. This coin not only served as a medium of economic exchange but also reinforced the emperor’s image and the values of military strength and civic pride within the empire.
