Note: Claudius II Gothicus, also known as Claudius Gothicus, was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 268 to 270. His reign was notably marked by his decisive victory over the Goths at the Battle of Naissus, which earned him his cognomen “Gothicus.” Claudius’ rule occurred during the tumultuous period known as the Crisis of the Third Century, characterized by political instability, economic decline, and frequent barbarian invasions. The obverse, with its depiction of the emperor, underscores Claudius’ authority and divine favor. The reverse, featuring Apollo, highlights the themes of health, victory, and cultural renewal. This coin not only played a practical role in the economy but also served as a powerful tool of imperial propaganda, aimed at legitimizing Claudius Gothicus’ rule and promoting the stability and prosperity of his reign.
