Note: Claudius II Gothicus was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 268 to 270. He earned the name “Gothicus” for his decisive victory over the Gothic tribes in the Battle of Naissus in 268, which was a critical moment in stabilizing the Roman Empire during the Crisis of the Third Century. Claudius II’s reign, although brief, is noted for restoring some measure of stability and security to the empire. The obverse, featuring Claudius II’s radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust, emphasizes his authority and divine favor. The reverse, depicting Neptune with a dolphin and trident, conveys themes of maritime power and control, reinforcing Claudius II’s image as a capable and protective ruler. This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also served as a powerful tool of imperial propaganda, aimed at legitimizing Claudius II’s rule and highlighting his achievements in restoring stability to the Roman Empire during a critical period.
