Note: Romanus I came to power during a period of internal strife and external threats. As an experienced admiral, he seized power and co-ruled with the legitimate emperor, Constantine VII, initially as a protector and later as a senior emperor. Romanus I is known for his administrative reforms and efforts to stabilize the empire. His rule saw attempts to consolidate imperial power and strengthen the Byzantine state, including reforms in the military and financial sectors.  His reign was marked by complex dynastic politics, including his efforts to secure the succession for his sons, which eventually led to his downfall and exile.
