Note: Elagabalus, notorious for his eccentricities and controversial reign, ascended to the Roman throne in AD 218 at the age of 14. His devotion to the Syrian sun god Elagabal and his disregard for traditional Roman practices stirred controversy and led to his eventual downfall and assassination in AD 222. The Denarius of Elagabalus minted in Rome in AD 219 provides valuable insights into the religious and cultural milieu of the Roman Empire during the early 3rd century. The coin’s imagery, featuring the emperor’s portrait and the depiction of Fortuna, underscores Elagabalus’s aspirations to divine status and his efforts to project an image of prosperity and stability. This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also served as a medium for communicating the emperor’s power and religious affiliations to the people of Rome and beyond.
