Note: Gordian III was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 238 to 244. He ascended the throne as a teenager during a time of considerable instability, known as the Year of the Six Emperors. Despite his youth, his reign saw efforts to stabilize the empire and notable military campaigns, especially against the Persian Empire. The obverse, featuring Gordian’s radiate and cuirassed bust, underscores his authority and divine favor. The reverse, depicting Sol with a globe, conveys themes of divine support and the emperor’s role in bringing prosperity and stability. This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also served as a powerful tool of imperial propaganda, aimed at reinforcing Gordian III’s legitimacy and the promise of renewal and strength for the Roman Empire during his military campaigns against the Persian Empire.
