Note: Hadrian was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 117 to 138. He is known for consolidating and fortifying the empire’s boundaries, particularly with the construction of Hadrian’s Wall in Britain. Hadrian’s reign was marked by a focus on stability, cultural patronage, and extensive travel throughout the provinces, which allowed him to address local issues and reinforce Roman authority.Ā  The obverse features a laureate head of Hadrian facing right, with slight drapery on his left shoulder. The laurel wreath is a symbol of victory and divinity, often used to emphasize the emperor’s success and divine favor. The drapery adds a touch of elegance and formality to his portrayal, reflecting Hadrian’s sophisticated and cultured image. The reverse depicts Neptune, the god of the sea, standing front, with his head turned to the left. He is nude, except for a cloak hanging around his right leg, and is resting his right foot on the prow of a ship. Neptune holds a trident in his left hand, a symbol of his dominion over the sea, and an acrostolium (a decorative prow ornament) in his right hand.Ā  The depiction of Neptune on this coin may symbolize Hadrian’s control over the empire’s vast maritime domains and his commitment to ensuring safe and prosperous trade routes. The peaceful and stable nature of Hadrian’s rule allowed for the flourishing of culture, architecture, and the arts, which is reflected in the refined and symbolic imagery on his coinage.
