Note: Aeolis was an ancient region on the western coast of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), known for its Greek settlements. One of the notable cities in Aeolis was Kyme (or Cyme), which was situated near the northern coast of the Aeolian Gulf. Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and childbirth, was common on ancient coins, reflecting her importance in Greek religion and mythology. The single-handled cup represents a kylix, a type of ancient Greek drinking cup. The kylix is depicted with a single handle, typical of ancient Greek pottery. NB: “Zoilos Magistrate,” it means that a person named Zoilos held a position of authority, likely in Kyme, during the period when the coin was minted. The combination of Artemis on the obverse and the kylix on the reverse is indicative of Kyme’s religious and cultural significance. The city had a strong connection to Artemis, and the depiction of the kylix reflects the city’s participation in Greek culture and rituals, including symposiums and religious ceremonies.
