Note: In the ancient Greek city of Kamiros, located on the island of Rhodes, the fig leaf held significant cultural and symbolic importance. As a coastal city, Kamiros depended not only on maritime trade but also on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of figs. The fig leaf, depicted on coins like the AR Tritemorion from Kamiros, symbolized the city’s connection to the land and its reliance on agriculture for sustenance and prosperity. Figs were a staple crop in the region, known for their delicious fruit and their role in providing nourishment to the people of Kamiros. Therefore, the fig leaf motif on the coinage represented the city’s agricultural wealth and fertility of the land. Moreover, the fig tree had deep-rooted associations with Greek mythology and religious rituals. In ancient Greece, the fig tree was linked to various deities, including Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, and Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. The fig tree was also believed to be sacred to Hermes, the messenger of the gods, who was worshipped in Kamiros alongside other Olympian deities.
