Note: Antigonus I Monophthalmus, also known simply as Antigonus the One-eyed, was one of the Diadochi, the successors of Alexander the Great, who carved out their own kingdoms after Alexander’s death. He played a significant role in the Wars of the Diadochi, a series of conflicts that followed Alexander’s demise. The Macedonian shield, also known as the “pelta,” was a distinctive shield used by Macedonian soldiers. This coin would have been widely circulated in the region and beyond, serving as a medium of exchange and also as a propaganda tool, showcasing the authority and power of Antigonus I Monophthalmus. The imagery of the Macedonian shield and helmet reinforced the Macedonian identity of the kingdom, while the symbols of the kerykeion and control marks added further significance and meaning to the coin.
