Note: Prusias I Cholos was one of the prominent Kings of Bithynia, ruling from approximately 228 to 182 BCE. He was known for his cunning and military prowess, earning the nickname “Cholos,” meaning “limping,” possibly due to an injury sustained in battle. Prusias expanded Bithynia’s territory through both diplomacy and warfare, notably allying with Rome against Philip V of Macedon. However, his reign was also marked by conflicts with neighboring powers, including the Seleucid Empire and Pergamon. Despite these challenges, Prusias was able to consolidate power and strengthen Bithynia’s position in the region. Apollo, the god of prophecy, music, and the arts, is depicted on the obverse, commonly portrayed with a laurel wreath, symbolizing his connection to poetry and the arts. The kithara, a type of lyre, symbolizes Apollo’s association with music. This coin likely reflects the cultural and artistic influence of Apollo and celebrates the reign of King Prousias.
