Note: During Kassander’s rule, he aimed to legitimize his authority by associating himself with Alexander the Great’s legacy. This coin, minted in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia, portrays the iconography commonly used during Alexander’s reign. The presence of Herakles on the obverse and Zeus on the reverse served to link Kassander’s reign with the divine lineage of Alexander and his successors. Herakles, renowned for his strength and heroism, was a favored symbol on Macedonian coinage, often associated with Alexander as his divine ancestor. The reverse imagery symbolizes Zeus’s authority and protection over the kingdom, with the eagle signifying his presence. This blend of divine imagery with Macedonian symbols reinforced Kassander’s claim to power and his connection to the illustrious lineage of the Macedonian kings, including Alexander the Great.
