Note: This Stater from Metapontum, minted circa 340-330 BC, features the bearded head of Leukippos, the legendary founder and protector of the city, wearing a Corinthian helmet on the obverse, symbolizing his role as a warrior and leader. The reverse displays Metapontum’s iconic symbol, a seven-grained barley ear, representing the city’s agricultural wealth, with a bird with open wings perched on the leaf. The inscription “META” identifies the city.
