Note: Marcian was a Roman Emperor who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from AD 450 to 457. His reign is noted for stabilizing the empire’s finances and defending against barbarian invasions. He succeeded Theodosius II and was the husband of Theodosius II’s sister, Pulcheria. The obverse features a pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Marcian facing right. The diadem symbolizes his imperial dignity, while the drapery and cuirass (body armor) highlight his role as both a ruler and a military leader. The reverse features Marcian’s monogram with a cross above it, all within a wreath. The cross symbolizes Christianity, reflecting the empire’s official religion and Marcian’s support for the church.Ā  The monogram serves as a personal mark, reinforcing his identity and legitimacy as emperor.
