Note: This Follis belongs to the reign of Maurice Tiberius, whose rule was dominated by near-constant warfare against the Persians, Avars, and Slavs. By this stage of his reign, Maurice had achieved some success on the eastern frontier, even concluding a favorable peace with Persia, but the empire remained under immense strain from ongoing conflicts in the Balkans. The Antioch mint, rebuilt and renamed Theoupolis after the great earthquake of 528, continued to play a vital role in supplying bronze coinage to the eastern provinces, and this issue reflects the empire’s efforts to sustain local economies and military garrisons during a turbulent yet pivotal era of Byzantine history.
