Note:This half follis was issued under Maurice Tiberius (582–602 AD), an emperor whose reign was dominated by exhausting wars against the Persians in the east and the Slavs and Avars in the Balkans. By this point, Maurice had just secured a favorable peace with Persia, briefly easing pressure on the eastern frontier, though the empire’s resources remained stretched thin. The Antioch mint, rebuilt and renamed Theoupolis after the earthquake of 528, was a key supplier of bronze coinage for local circulation, and this smaller denomination reflects the empire’s need to sustain daily trade and regional garrisons during a period of both hardship and temporary diplomatic success.
