Note: Maximian was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 286 to 305 AD. He was a co-emperor with Diocletian as part of the Tetrarchy, a system designed to provide a stable and manageable governance structure by dividing the empire into four regions. Maximian’s reign focused on the Western provinces, where he worked to consolidate and defend the empire’s frontiers during a period of significant internal and external challenges. Radiate was a bronze coin introduced by the Tetrarchs, characterized by its radiate crown and significant role in the empire’s currency system. This specific coin was minted in Cyzicus between 295 and 299 AD. By this time, the radiate had become a prominent denomination, reflecting both the economic and political changes of the era. The obverse features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximian facing right. The radiate crown symbolizes divine favor and imperial authority, while the drapery and cuirass highlight his role as both a military leader and an emperor. The reverse depicts Jupiter presenting Victory on a globe to Maximian. The globe represents the world or empire, while Victory symbolizes military success and divine support. The presence of “KE” between the figures indicates the mintmark of Cyzicus.
