Note: Similar coin sold on Stephen Album Auction for rare coins (Auction 36 lot 850) in an inferior condition explaining the reason for replacing Arghun’s name that should appear in Arabic by numerals to a probability of ascending resistance by the local authorities, who were issuing coins as Astarabad in the name of Arghun (and Ghazan) until 693. Following Gaykhatu’s downfall, Ghazan ascended to the throne in 1295. As the new Ilkhan, Ghazan implemented a series of reforms aimed at stabilizing the Ilkhanate’s economy and governance. He adopted Islam as his religion, a significant departure from his predominantly Buddhist predecessors, and initiated policies to promote Islamic institutions and practices within the realm. Ghazan’s reign was characterized by a blend of Mongol administrative practices and Islamic governance. He implemented administrative reforms, encouraged trade and commerce, and promoted religious tolerance within his realm. Ghazan’s policies aimed to consolidate the Ilkhanate’s power and foster internal stability. Furthermore, Ghazan’s reign saw significant military campaigns, including expeditions against neighboring powers such as the Mamluks of Egypt and the Chagatai Khanate. These military endeavors aimed to expand the Ilkhanate’s territory and assert Mongol dominance in the region. Overall, Ghazan’s rule marked a pivotal period in the history of the Ilkhanate, characterized by reforms, military campaigns, and the consolidation of power. His reign demonstrated the adaptability of the Mongol rulers and their ability to integrate diverse cultural and religious influences into their governance.
