Note: Nerva was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 96 to 98. His brief reign followed the assassination of Domitian and marked the beginning of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. Nerva is known for stabilizing the empire after a period of turmoil, restoring the Senate’s authority, and initiating several social reforms. His rule included the provinces of the Roman Empire as a whole and lasted from AD 96 to 98. This period was marked by political stabilization and efforts to gain the support of both the Senate and the army. The obverse features a laureate head of Nerva facing right. The laurel wreath signifies his status as a revered and legitimate ruler.Ā  “IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P”, this formal title emphasizes Nerva’s status as emperor, supreme priest, holder of tribunician power, consul for the third time, and father of the country.Ā  The reverse shows Aequitas, the personification of equity, standing left, holding scales in one hand and a cornucopia in the other. The scales symbolize justice and fairness, while the cornucopia represents abundance and prosperity.Ā  “AEQVITAS AVGVST SC”; This inscription emphasizes the emperor’s commitment to fairness and justice, validated by the decree of the Senate. Nerva’s reign focused on restoring senatorial authority and implementing social reforms to stabilize the empire. By emphasizing justice and equity on his coinage, Nerva sought to portray his rule as fair and just, appealing to both the Senate and the Roman populace.
