Note: Struck during the early years of Phocas’ reign, this follis reflects a period of political turmoil and unrest in Byzantium. Phocas’ violent ascent had left the empire vulnerable to internal dissent and external threats, particularly from the Persians. The coin’s heavy bronze format illustrates the continued reliance on large folles for everyday transactions, even as imperial authority and coinage quality began to decline under his unstable rule.
