Note: Phocas came to power in 602 AD through a violent coup, overthrowing Emperor Maurice. His reign was marked by internal strife and external threats, particularly from the Persian Empire. The inclusion of his wife Leontia on the coinage was a significant departure from tradition, showcasing their co-rulership and perhaps aiming to legitimize his controversial rise to power. The Follis of Phocas with Leontia is a striking representation of early Byzantine numismatic art. It combines political propaganda, religious iconography, and detailed craftsmanship. This coin not only served as currency but also as a medium to convey the legitimacy and divine right of Phocas and Leontia’s rule, reflecting the turbulent yet profoundly religious nature of their reign.
