Note: Phocas was a Byzantine Emperor from 602 to 610 AD, who came to power through a violent coup against Emperor Maurice. His reign was marked by brutality, incompetence, and economic decline, leading to widespread unrest. Phocas faced internal revolts and lost key territories to the Sassanian Persians. His oppressive rule weakened the Byzantine Empire and contributed to its decline. He was ultimately overthrown in 610 AD, ending a tumultuous period in Byzantine history. The obverse depict Leontia, Phocas’ wife, standing next to Phocas, holding a cruciform scepter, indicating her imperial status.
