Note:Ā  Gaius, commonly known as Caligula, was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 37 to 41. His short reign was notorious for its extravagant excesses, cruelty, and eccentricities, which led to significant political instability and ultimately his assassination. The obverse features a laureate head of Caligula facing right. The laurel wreath signifies victory and divine favor, emphasizing his status as emperor. The reverse shows Zeus standing facing, with his head turned to the left. He holds an eagle in his right hand and a scepter in his left. The eagle is a symbol of Zeus’ dominion over the skies and his role as king of the gods, while the scepter signifies his authority and power, which highlights the religious and cultural significance of the chief deity to the people of Aezanis. This coin facilitated economic transactions and reinforced the emperor’s connection to both the local traditions and the broader Roman state.
