Note: Claudius II, also known as Claudius Gothicus, was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 268 to 270. His short reign was notable for significant military successes, particularly his victory over the Goths at the Battle of Naissus, which earned him the cognomen “Gothicus.” Claudius II’s rule came during the Crisis of the Third Century, a time characterized by political fragmentation, economic difficulties, and external threats.Ā  The obverse features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Claudius II facing right. The radiate crown symbolizes divine favor and association with the sun god, while the drapery and cuirass highlight his roles as both a civil and military leader. The reverse shows a vexillum (a military standard) between two standards, with “S-R” flanking the base of the vexillum. The vexillum and standards symbolize military strength and unity.
