Note: Probus, who reigned as Roman Emperor from AD 276 to 282, is remembered for his military prowess and efforts to restore stability to the empire after the crisis of the third century. His reign was marked by successful campaigns against various barbarian groups and internal usurpers, as well as initiatives to rebuild and secure the empire’s frontiers. The imagery on this Antoninianus underlines the divine endorsement of Probus’s rule through his association with Sol Invictus. Sol driving the quadriga suggests the unstoppable and all-encompassing nature of the emperor’s power, reflecting both military victory and cosmic order. The eagle-tipped sceptre on the obverse reinforces Probus’s authority, connecting it with the symbol of Jupiter, the king of the gods. The invocation of Sol Invictus and the symbols of power on the coin serve to reassure the emperor’s subjects of the stability and prosperity of the empire under his leadership.
