Note: Probus was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 276 to 282 during a period of relative stabilization following the Crisis of the Third Century. His rule included the provinces of the entire Roman Empire, and he was known for his military prowess and efforts to restore stability and prosperity. The obverse features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Probus facing right. The radiate crown signifies his divine favor and status as emperor.Ā  “IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG” stands for “Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Probus Pius Felix Augustus,” a formal title emphasizing Probus’s status as emperor.Ā  The reverse shows the emperor standing right, holding a scepter surmounted by an eagle, receiving a globe from Jupiter. This imagery symbolizes divine endorsement and the emperor’s role in maintaining global order and prosperity.Ā  “CLEMENTIA TEMP / A• / XXI” translates to “Clemency of the Times.”Ā  This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also served as a powerful tool of imperial propaganda, aimed at legitimizing the ruler’s authority and garnering support during a period of recovery and stabilization.
