Note: The Seleucid Kingdom was a Hellenistic state that emerged from the empire of Alexander the Great. Founded by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander’s generals, the Seleucid Kingdom encompassed much of the Near East, including parts of modern-day Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. The Seleucids ruled from their capital cities, such as Antioch, Seleucia on the Tigris, and Babylon.
During the later years of the Seleucid Kingdom, Cleopatra Thea and Antiochos VIII played significant roles in its history. Cleopatra Thea was the daughter of Ptolemy VI of Egypt and married first to Alexander Balas, a claimant to the Seleucid throne. After Alexander’s death, Cleopatra Thea married her brother, Antiochos VIII Grypus, to solidify her position as queen and regent.
