Note: Augustus (Gaius Octavius), the founder of the Roman Empire, reigned as its first emperor from 27 BC to AD 14. He established the principate, the first phase of the Roman Empire, which marked the end of the Roman Republic and initiated a period of relative peace known as the Pax Romana. During the period, Augustus was consolidating his power and establishing the structures of the Roman Empire. Antioch, a major city in the province of Syria, played a significant role in the administration and economy of the eastern territories. This coin reflects the new imperial order and Augustus’s authority over the provinces. The obverse features a bare head of Augustus facing right. The bare head signifies his authority and the transition from the republic to the empire under his rule. The laurel wreath is a symbol of victory and honor, commonly associated with Roman emperors. It emphasizes Augustus’s achievements and his role as a bringer of peace and stability.
