Note: Elagabalus, also known as Varius Avitus Bassianus, was a Roman Emperor who ruled from AD 218 to 222. He is known for his controversial and unconventional reign, which was marked by his strong commitment to the Sol Invictus deity and significant religious reforms. His reign was relatively short and ended with his assassination. The obverse features a laureate head of Elagabalus facing right. The laurel wreath signifies victory and imperial authority, while the laureate head represents his status as emperor. The reverse depicts the draped and turreted bust of the city-goddess of Laodicea ad Mare within a distyle shrine. The city-goddess, often represented with a turreted crown, symbolizes the city’s divine protection and patronage.Ā  Laodicea ad Mare issued coins featuring its patron deity to reinforce its status and divine protection. The representation of the city-goddess on the coin emphasizes the close relationship between the emperor and the cities under his rule, reflecting the local pride and reverence for their city’s divine protector.
