Note: This Follis was issued under Tancred, Regent of the Principality of Antioch, following the First Crusade. As a key Crusader leader, Tancred oversaw the administration of Antioch during a formative period when the new Latin principality was consolidating its power amid ongoing conflicts with surrounding Muslim states. The Antioch mint produced bronze coinage like this first-type follis to facilitate local commerce, pay garrisons, and assert the authority of the Crusader rulers, blending Byzantine monetary traditions with the practical needs of a newly established Latin regime in the Levant.
