Note: Theophilus ruled as Byzantine Emperor from 829 to 842 AD, succeeding his father Michael II. He fiercely enforced iconoclasm, persecuting iconophiles and destroying icons. Despite military successes against the Abbasid Caliphate, his reign faced internal unrest and external threats. Theophilus is remembered for his cultural patronage and his extensive diplomatic efforts. The obverse features a half-length facing figure of Theophilus, wearing the loros (imperial robe) and a tufa (crown) decorated with pellets. He is depicted holding a labarum (military standard) and a globus cruciger (cross-topped orb), symbols of his authority as emperor. The reverse side bears the inscription “+ΘEO-FILE AVG-OVSτE SV hICAS” which translates to “Theophilus Augustus, eternal ruler of the Romans.” This inscription emphasizes Theophilus’ imperial titles and authority. This coin serves as a tangible artifact of Theophilus’ rule, showcasing his imperial power and the stability of the Byzantine Empire during his reign.
