Note: Trajan Decius was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 249 to 251. His reign was marked by significant military challenges, including invasions by the Goths and other barbarian tribes. Decius is also known for his persecution of Christians, issuing an edict that required all Roman citizens to perform a sacrifice to the Roman gods, a measure that led to widespread martyrdom among Christians.Ā  The obverse features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Trajan Decius facing right. The radiate crown signifies his association with the sun god Sol and his divine favor. The drapery and cuirass emphasize his role as a military leader, projecting an image of strength and authority during a time of external threats. The reverse shows the Genius of Illyricum standing to the left, wearing a polos (a high, cylindrical headdress often associated with divinity), and holding a patera (a shallow libation dish) in his right hand and a cornucopiae (a symbol of abundance) in his left. The Genius is depicted as a protective and beneficent figure, symbolizing the emperor’s connection to and protection of the province of Illyricum.
