Note: Valerian was a Roman emperor who ruled from 253 to 260 AD during the Crisis of the Third Century. His rule included the provinces of Gaul, Britain, Spain, and Egypt. This period was marked by significant political instability and external threats from barbarian invasions and the Persian Empire. The obverse features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valerian facing right. The radiate crown signifies divine favor, the drapery symbolizes his status, and the cuirass represents his role as a military leader. “IMP VALERIANVS P AVG” stands for “Imperator Valerianus Pius Augustus,” a formal title emphasizing Valerian’s status as the emperor.Ā  The reverse shows Sol, the sun god, standing left, hailing with his right hand and holding a globe in his left. The globe symbolizes the dominion of the emperor over the world, while Sol’s raised hand is a gesture of greeting or benediction, symbolizing the emperor’s favor and protection.Ā  “AETER-N – ITATI AVGG” translates to “To the Eternity of the Emperors.” This inscription emphasizes the eternal nature of the emperor’s reign and the enduring stability they aimed to provide. This coin not only facilitated economic transactions but also served as a powerful tool of imperial propaganda, aimed at legitimizing the ruler’s rule and garnering support during a turbulent period.
