Valerian I’s reign occurred during the Crisis of the Third Century, a period of severe instability marked by frequent changes in leadership, external invasions, and internal revolts. Valerian faced significant military threats, particularly from the Sassanian Empire, and was eventually captured in battle, leading to a significant blow to the Roman Empire. Gallienus continued to rule after his father’s capture, striving to maintain the stability of the empire.Ā  The obverse features a radiate and draped bust of Valerian I facing right. The radiate crown signifies his divine favor and status as emperor.Ā  The reverse shows Valerian I and his son Gallienus standing facing each other, each resting on shields, with two upright spears behind them.
