Note: This follis of Constans II shows the emperor facing, crowned and holding the globus cruciger, a symbol of Christian imperial authority. The reverse with the large M denotes its value of 40 nummi, flanked by mint marks. Issued during a turbulent reign marked by wars with the Arabs and Lombards, as well as internal dissent, it reflects the resilience of the Byzantine state in one of its most challenging centuries.
