Note: This follis of Maurice Tiberius appears to be a possible barbaric imitation, reflecting the wide circulation and local copying of Byzantine coinage during his reign. Maurice’s rule was a turbulent period marked by prolonged wars with the Persians and Slavs, alongside efforts to reform the army and stabilize the empire’s finances. Cyzicus, an important mint in Asia Minor, produced large quantities of bronze coinage, and imitative issues such as this suggest either unofficial provincial output or local necessity to meet demand. Such coins highlight both the empire’s economic strains and the influence of Byzantine currency beyond official mint control.
