Note:  Anastasius I is credited with reforming the Byzantine monetary system. He introduced the large bronze follis to address inflation and standardize the currency, which had become fragmented and devalued.  His reforms stabilized the economy, improved tax collection, and facilitated trade. The large folles became a standard currency in the Byzantine Empire, influencing its economy for centuries. Apart from monetary reforms, Anastasius strengthened the empire’s defenses and administrative efficiency, securing his legacy as a capable and forward-thinking ruler. The detailed depiction of Anastasius and the symbolic elements on the coin illustrate the blending of imperial authority, military might, and Christian faith that characterized his reign. This coin not only served a practical economic function but also conveyed the ideological and administrative priorities of one of Byzantium’s key reformist emperors.
