Note: Arcadius was a Roman Emperor who reigned from AD 383 to 408. He was the eldest son of Theodosius I and ruled the Eastern Roman Empire, which included provinces such as Thrace, Asia Minor, and Egypt. His reign was characterized by increasing tensions with the Western Roman Empire and internal challenges, including the rise of powerful ministers who effectively controlled the empire. The obverse features a pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Arcadius facing right. The diadem symbolizes imperial authority, while the cuirass (a military breastplate) indicates his role as a protector of the empire, even though Arcadius was more known for his religious devotion than military prowess. The reverse shows the emperor standing facing, with his head turned to the right. He holds a standard in one hand and a globe in the other, symbolizing his command over the Roman legions and the world. The standard was a military ensign, and the globe symbolized dominion over the known world, reinforcing the emperor’s role as the guardian of the Roman state. The mintmark “SMKA” in the exergue identifies the coin as being struck at the Cyzicus mint.
